BOOK REVIEW: TEN LITTLE TRICKSTERS by PENELOPE ANNE COLE
Penelope Anne Cole's newest book, Ten Little Tricksters is by far the cutest book I have read about Halloween. The colorful illustrations done by Kevin Collier will capture the attention of every child reading this book. This is an ingenious and fun way to introduce young children to counting from one to ten.

Book Review: 'I am Living in 2 Homes by Garcelle Beauvais and Sebastian A. Jones
Haitian actress Garcelle Beauvais and co-author Sebastian A. Jones have done it again. They have written a must read book. I am Living in 2 Homes handles with grace and wisdom a very important problem prevalent in today’s society.
It is never easy for children to understand why their parents have to live in separate homes. Oftentimes, the children are caught in the middle and they end up paying the price for the confusion that derives from their parents getting a divorce. As a classroom teacher, I have seen firsthand what happens to children whose parents are divorced. In most cases, it is not a pretty picture.
Beauvais and Jones address a serious issue in a compassionate way. All children living in two homes who read this well written book will fully understand that it is not their fault mommy and daddy live apart.
One thing that resonates well with me from reading this book- the authors focused on the positives. In life, we can let negative situations define who we become, or we can muster enough courage to seek out the positives.
I see I am Living in 2 Homes as a must read for all parents who are divorced and want to find a way to help their children cope with their new living arrangements. More importantly, the book teaches children, regardless of where they live, that they are deeply loved by both parents.
This passage from the book is priceless:
When Jay and I go to Mommy’s house, she says: “Be at peace, my gentle loves, my favorite people under heaven above; it’s a grown up choice, through no fault of your own, your Dad and I are happier… living in 2 homes.”
Children are smart little people that adults often take for granted. I believe if we are honest and speak the truth in love to them, they will respond in a favorable way.
The illustrations by James C. Webster make it easy for the reader to connect with the story. Mr. Webster’s illustrations are by far some of the best I have seen.

Elizabeth Woodrum is an elementary teacher in Ohio. She came to love writing when she was in elementary school, but more recently began writing material for use in her classroom. A Different Kind of Safari Book Blast
I’m pleased to be contributing this review to the Small Fry Safari Readers Challenge 2014, hosted by The Bookshelf Gargoyle, specifically under the category “A book with something related to safari in the title”. Click HERE for more information.
Inspired by real-life adventure, the story behind the story unfolded when I went on an African safari back in 2001. The trip was lead by my father whose dream was to share the safari experience with his family. Little did I know that this trip was going to incite me to write a children’s adventure book but it did.
The storyline made it appearance when my family spotted a pod of hippos and one was pink! My son Ray fourteen at the time immediately named her “Rosie”. Curious and wanting to learn more about this hippo we asked the guide many questions about hippos and hippo behavior. Specifically I wanted to know why the pink hippo stood so far outside of her pod. The familiarity of the guides answer took me by surprise, he explained that “Rosie” was tolerated but not necessarily accepted by the herd because of her differences. As a parent of a child with special needs I immediately felt a strong affiliation with Rosie’s situation as did my son Ray who has experienced his own challenges with acceptance. Inspired, I decided to share the story with the world by weaving them into a children's adventure book that celebrates differences. The book is entitled “A Different Kind of Safari”. Helen Hipp’s experience raising a special needs child led her to an M.A. in clinical psychology and certification as a life coach. She began her career as a psychotherapist to help people find answers for their life problems. Her work eventually evolved into a coaching practice, WithinU Life Coaching, focusing on individuals with special needs and their families. Helen uses her 13+ years of counseling experience and 20+ years’ experience as a successful advocate for individuals with special needs by helping them reveal their innate ability to solve difficult situations. Her debut book " A Different Kind of Safari" puts into words the essence of Helen's teachings addressing the many questions life asks by offering up lighthearted, ever-changing perspectives that transform personal challenges into opportunities.

About the Author: Teddy O'Malley
Jourden Cleghorn, who writes and illustrates children’s books under the pen name Teddy O' Malley, was born in in Saint Louis, Missouri. She has traveled all over the United States and enjoys learning about new things and other cultures. She dreams of visiting a foreign country. She has enjoyed studying Spanish, German, and now Italian as well. Jourden paired her language skills with pictures of puppies to write Tell Me How You Say Good Night, a bedtime story. And a childhood friendship with a biracial girl named Hope influenced Jourden to make the Destiny and Faith characters biracial in her series about twins. Many of her books include a thread about friendship and acceptance of others. Jourden previously worked part time as a nurse assistant helping the disabled and elderly.

She suffered severe injuries as a result of this accident including a cracked sternum, punctured lung, broken arm, and broken foot. I am from South Africa and I live in a city called Pretoria. I am a Chemical Engineer by day and a children’s book writer by night. I am married to a wonderful man and we have a beautiful two year old daughter called Allegra. I love writing stories for my daughter, who is a constant inspiration.
I have always loved reading. My childhood was filled with books and you would often find me crouched the corner of my room devouring the pages of my favourite book. I lived for Tuesday mornings as this would bring with it the excitement of a trip to the local library for story hour and the opportunity to take home a new book. I was the local librarian’s worst nightmare. I would arrive a few minutes early to check that she had not mistakenly chosen a book that had already been read in story hour.
I was a very bossy three year old with an insatiable appetite for books! This has not really changed much in the last twenty seven years. Dr. Seuss was my absolute favourite and to say that my copy of One, Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish was well read would be an understatement.
When it comes to writing, my daughter is my biggest inspiration. I love seeing her face light up with excitement when we sit down to read a book before bedtime. My daughter was fascinated by giraffes after we went on a safari trip in late 2012. This planted the seed for my picture book called How Andrew Got His Spots which is a rhyming adaptation of a story I originally wrote in the third grade. My daughter has since grown into a healthy two year old with a passion for aircraft which was the inspiration for writing Goodnight, Sleep tight, What a Wonderful Flight.
I am sure that there are many parents in the world (myself included), who are quite decidedly sick and tired of reading the same favourite picture book night after night. I believe that the words of Oscar Wilde best describe how children should feel about picture books when he said, If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.

How Andrew Got His Spots is a delight to read. First of all, I love rhymes. I have great admiration for authors that can write in rhymes. The story will appeal to young readers because it chronicles the life of a young giraffe that has many questions about his appearance. Young children are very inquisitive by nature and the story of Andrew will teach them it is okay to ask questions, as that is how one learns.I recommend How Andrew Got His Spots for every pre-school library. Teachers can easily use the story to teach young readers about end rhymes in a fun way. When my kids were young, I often read rhyming stories to them, encouraging them to repeat the end words. My children were able to learn a slew of new words reading the rhyming stories.

I lived for Tuesday mornings as this would bring with it the excitement of a trip to the local library for story hour and the opportunity to take home a new book. I was the local librarian’s worst nightmare. I would arrive a few minutes early to check that she had not mistakenly chosen a book that had already been read in story hour.
I was a very bossy three year old with an insatiable appetite for books! This has not really changed much in the last twenty seven years. Dr. Seuss was my absolute favourite and to say that my copy of One, Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish was well read would be an understatement.
When it comes to writing, my daughter is my biggest inspiration. I love seeing her face light up with excitement when we sit down to read a book before bedtime. My daughter was fascinated by giraffes after we went on a safari trip in late 2012. This planted the seed for my picture book called How Andrew Got His Spots which is a rhyming adaptation of a story I originally wrote in the third grade. My daughter has since grown into a healthy two year old with a passion for aircraft which was the inspiration for writing Goodnight, Sleep tight, What a Wonderful Flight.
I am sure that there are many parents in the world (myself included), who are quite decidedly sick and tired of reading the same favourite picture book night after night. I believe that the words of Oscar Wilde best describe how children should feel about picture books when he said, If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.

I love reading in rhymes, and this book has rhymes that will make it fun to read. I love the way the author introduces the young reader to the different use of aircraft. I am from South Africa and I live in a city called Pretoria. I am a Chemical Engineer by day and a children’s book writer by night. I am married to a wonderful man and we have a beautiful two year old daughter called Allegra. I love writing stories for my daughter, who is a constant inspiration.

Mrs. D. (Olga D’Agostino), an award-winning children’s author, was born in western Ukraine. She lived in the historical city of Lviv, where she studied business in Lviv Business College and worked in the food industry. In 1992, she immigrated to the USA with her two small daughters and for years worked in her own business. In 2011, she began her career as a writer, focusing on writing children’s books that have meaning and provide valuable lessons. Two of her children’s books, The Trees Have Hearts and Good Morning, World!, won Mom’s Choice Awards in 2013. She is a member of SCBWI and speaks a few languages fluently. She lives in the famous town of Smithville, NJ, with her husband Patrick and a meticulous old cat named Nyda.
